Embossing & Debossing

Some people think it’s one in the same – not the case. Put simply, embossing creates a raised effect to your paper, and debossing creates a pressed effect.

We find that we mostly emboss our stock on uncoated paper, but it looks great either way!

Patatap: An Explosive Visual Representation of Sound

Remember the days when you were so easily amused by shiny and colourful things? Okay, maybe those days aren’t as long ago as we would imagine. Sure, it’s more socially acceptable for a child to chase rainbows and butterflies across a field than it is for an adult. But hey, we enjoy what we enjoy.

Okay, this is where I introduce the incredibly amazing website and app that enables you to create delicious sounds that explode in colour. Patatap is a portable animated sound kit. With a touch of a key or finger, you can create explosive melodies as well as flashing colourful shapes. If you have synesthesia, this is pretty much your brain on display for all to see.

The 3 WordPress Plugins We Can't Live Without

We’ve recently started working heavily with WordPress. What became quickly apparent was that there are some must-have features (for us at least) that don’t come with a vanilla WordPress installation.

These are the 3 WordPress plugins that we use for every WordPress site that we build here at Pictura Creative.

WordPress SEO by Yoast

I was surprised to discover that WordPress has no built-in support for basic SEO related tasks such as customising the meta title or adding meta descriptions to posts or pages. The web today is driven almost entirely by search, which makes this omission all the more glaring.

The WordPress SEO by Yoast adds support for many SEO-related tasks, including the basic meta tag editing on a per-page or post basis, adding site-wide social metadata and connecting your site to external search tools such as Google Webmaster Tools.

WordPress SEO goes further, adding advanced features like focus keyword analysis, breadcrumbs & XML sitemaps just to name a few.

All in all, a fantastic plugin.

For more, see the WordPress SEO homepage, or the official plugin page.

A Brief Evolution of Type on the Web

These days, websites have a new dimension added with the wide use of custom font embedding options like Typekit, Google Webfonts, and others.

No longer will you see websites flooded with Arial, Verdana, Georgia and other ‘web safe’ fonts. Even though you may not have even noticed some websites using web safe font variations, but once you see how a site designed with custom fonts stands out from the rest – you will always see the difference! The latest websites that I have been working at Pictura, utilise custom fonts such as: Proxima Nova, Open Sans, Brandon Grotesque… just to name a few!

You might have asked – what are ‘web safe’ fonts? Web safe fonts are the pre-installed fonts on Windows and Mac systems. Whilst there were a lot of fonts on these platforms – if a user didn’t have that specific font on their computer whilst browsing a site, the font would then default to an alternative one.

Stock Up: My Favourite Stock Websites & Why

Stock Images. I bet those two words create a collage of cheesy imagery in your mind. We all have our pre-existing opinions of stock imagery. Whether we type in dog walking through a park with it’s owners, and we get exactly that; with humans that are just way too excited to be walking their dog through a park. But what about when you try and water down the deliberate photography by using keywords such as ‘candid’ or ‘natural’? Suddenly your 1248765 pages have reduced to 3, but it hasn’t seemed to narrow down what you’re after.

I’ve collated a few of my favourite stock imagery websites and reasons why I love them.
